Good think I really do not have a strong sense of smell because the other day I went to the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers to see what is often nicknamed the “Corpse Flower.” It is actually Amorphophallus titanum, also known as the titan arum , many people say the flower stinks of rotting fish when it is in full bloom. Sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon!
The flower itself is quite large, as tall as most people, but I did not get any sense of its supposed putrid stink. The people at the conservatory said it was at the end of the bloom cycle so did not have as strong of an stench.
It still was an unusual site, worth the trip a few blocks to Golden Gate Park.
I have not been to the Conservatory for a while, I forgot how much it smells and feels like being in the tropics. The air is heavy with humidity, and has that unmistakable scent of tropical rain forest, all the while it was our normal foggy and cold San Francisco summer outside.
They actually had to put up a sign asking people not to throw money into the pond. I guess the thrill of having your penny land on one of the lily pads would be too much.
