Being a backyard tourist

Kyoto, Japan, river

I have been fortunate to be able to travel on occasion for clients, this photo is from a five-day shoot in Kyoto, Japan. It was incredible, looking forward to the next opportunity.

This photo was on a river boat which was taking us to an exclusive resort just outside of Kyoto, it was raining but that only added to the beauty of the location. I hope to get back there soon (to Kyoto, I do not need to go to the resort, anywhere in Kyoto is perfect.)

As I sit here writing this, at my home in San Francisco, with views of Golden Gate Park and downtown, I have to admit how much I take that for granted. My kids think San Francisco is ordinary, they lived all their lives here, they think Los Angeles is exotic. I lived there when I was in my late teens, so I take Los Angeles for granted. Talk about First World Problems. What a depressing way to view the world. There is so much to be gained by treating every day as an adventure, be a tourist in our own town once and a while.

Travel is amazing, meeting new people is exotic, but, to borrow a line from a movie “No matter where you go, there you are.”

I could keep writing today’s post, but need to go outside now, and enjoy the beauty that is just outside all of our doors.
